Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Tuesday called for meaningful negotiations with the government to resolve the ongoing political impasse. Speaking to the media, he stated that political tension has escalated significantly, and keeping the "most popular" leader in isolation while denying him meetings with his family is not a solution to any problem.
Gohar emphasized that denying meetings with the PTI founder's family has exacerbated political complications, causing suffering not only to his party but to the entire country. He demanded that the ban on meetings with the PTI founder must end immediately, noting that it has been 375 days since such access was restricted.
He insisted that negotiations with the government are essential, claiming that political opponents are taking undue advantage under the pretext of emergency and governor's rule. The Chairman noted that the current environment of uncertainty is detrimental to the national economy and democratic stability.
Barrister Gohar further stated that the PTI remains committed to constitutional supremacy and the rule of law. He urged the state institutions to play a neutral role in facilitating a conducive environment where political stakeholders can sit together to find a way forward.
The PTI leadership has repeatedly expressed concerns over the treatment of their founder in Adiala Jail. Gohar reiterated that the party is ready to engage in a constructive dialogue provided that the government shows sincerity and addresses the core grievances regarding the fundamental rights of their leadership.
He warned that if the current path of confrontation continues, it will only lead to further instability. The party leadership believes that the only way to steer the country out of the current crisis is through a transparent and inclusive political process.
Addressing the rumors of potential governor's rule in certain provinces, Gohar termed such measures as undemocratic and a violation of the spirit of the 18th Amendment. He stated that the PTI would resist any attempt to bypass the mandate of the people.
The Chairman concluded his remarks by calling upon the media and civil society to play their role in highlighting the importance of political reconciliation. He maintained that the PTI is the largest political force in the country and its exclusion from the decision-making process is a major hurdle in national progress.
As the political temperature continues to rise, the call for dialogue from the PTI leadership reflects a strategic shift towards seeking a political settlement rather than prolonged agitation. The government has yet to issue a formal response to these specific demands.
Observers suggest that the coming days will be critical in determining whether the government and the opposition can find common ground to prevent further escalation of the political crisis.
