United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump has suggested renaming another strategic location just weeks after changing Lake Ontario to Lake America. However, this time he is going global and wants to rename the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil trade route from where around one-fifth of global oil shipments pass.
In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the 80-year-old Republican president claimed that the U.S. has achieved complete control over the Strait of Hormuz and suggested that the strategic waterway should be named after him. He wrote, 'Now that we have it under U.S.A control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be 'hotter' than ever before.'
The Strait of Hormuz has faced disruptions amid renewed escalation between the U.S. and Iran; however, the U.S. maintains that the waterway is navigable without any threats. The strait connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is considered one of the most strategically important energy routes in the world.
Despite official claims, shipping data suggests traffic remains far below normal levels. Only four commodity vessels passed through the strait on Tuesday, compared with a 10-day average of about 13 vessels, according to preliminary data from ship-tracking company کےپلر (Kpler). Trump's proposed name change is not an official renaming of the waterway, but rather a suggestion made in his social media post.
