University Road to be fully motorable by Sept 15: Sharjeel

Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon on Saturday visited the Red Line bus rapid transit (BRT) project and reviewed ongoing construction work. Memon was given a detailed briefing regarding the progress of the Red Line project, construction activities and work under way in different parts. Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Trans Karachi CEO Zubair Channa, consultants and engineers were also present on the occasion.

Talking to the media, the minister said work on the Red Line project is proceeding swiftly, with the transport department and other relevant provincial institutions working round the clock. He noted that carpeting has been completed at multiple points along University Road, while efforts are under way to make the entire corridor 100 per cent motorable by September 15.

He added that construction on other sections of the Red Line, including bridges, is also advancing rapidly, while work on the Yellow Line project is simultaneously under way. The Sindh government is committed to providing modern commuting facilities to Karachiites through various BRT initiatives, alongside plans to procure a large fleet of steel double-decker buses, he maintained.

Memon announced that provincial government-backed taxis will soon hit Karachi's streets, adding that agreements for 500 electric buses have already been finalized and orders placed. These buses, alongside electric bikes and scooters, will shortly be made available to the city's residents. Highlighting the electoral trajectory of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), he credited President Asif Ali Zardari and party leadership for national development milestones.
