Jerry Koosman, an All-Star left-hander who secured the final out of the 'Miracle Mets' surprising 1969 World Series title triumph over the Baltimore Orioles, died on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz stated that Koosman had been ill for about a year and passed away from multiple complications in Osceola, Wisconsin, surrounded by his children.

One of the most iconic images in baseball history remains Koosman leaping onto catcher Jerry Grote in celebration on the Shea Stadium mound the moment the World Series was clinched. The 'Miracle Mets' had never finished with a winning record before that 1969 triumph.

He then pitched for Minnesota from 1979 to 1981, the Chicago White Sox from 1981 to 1983, and Philadelphia from 1984 to 1985. Koosman was born in Appleton, Minnesota, on December 23, 1942, and played baseball while serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

He is survived by his sons, Michael and Shaw, and his daughter, Danielle. His marriage to the former LaVonne Sorum ended in divorce.

The sports community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a player who defined an era for New York baseball. His legacy as a clutch performer remains etched in the annals of the sport, particularly for his pivotal role in the 1969 championship run.

Fans and former teammates have taken to social media to pay tribute to his humble nature and his dedication to the game. His contributions to the Mets organization were recognized when his number was retired, cementing his status as a franchise icon.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days. The Mets organization is planning a memorial tribute at their home stadium to honor his memory during the upcoming season.

Koosman's journey from a small town in Minnesota to the pinnacle of professional baseball serves as an inspiration to many young athletes. His career statistics reflect not just talent, but a remarkable consistency over nearly two decades of play.
