Brighton Sisters' Drowning Tragedy: Coroner Rules Deaths as Suicide

Three sisters who drowned in the sea off Brighton died by suicide, a coroner has officially ruled after a thorough investigation into the tragic incident that shocked the local community. Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were recovered from the water in the early hours of May 13 after travelling from the capital to the East Sussex coast.

An inquest held at Woodvale Coroner's Court in Brighton heard that the three sisters, who lived together in Greenford, west London, had been leading very secluded lives following a family tragedy. Investigators told the court that their reclusive lifestyle intensified significantly after the death of their mother, Janice Adetoro, who had tragically drowned in Birmingham Lake back in 2010.

Within less than 48 hours before their own deaths, the women took a taxi to Birmingham and were dropped off near Brookvale Park Lake, an area closely linked to their past. The location was chosen deliberately, as it was situated very close to the exact spot where their mother had lost her life nearly a decade and a half prior to this event.

Following their visit to Birmingham, they returned to London in the early hours of May 12 before immediately embarking on another journey to Brighton that same evening. CCTV footage reviewed during the court proceedings showed that they arrived near the seafront at about 10:21 p.m. and walked together along the coastal path.

In the security recordings, it can be clearly seen that they were walking along the road adjacent to the beach before they were last seen alive at 2:42 a.m. Postmortem reports revealed that the ultimate cause of death for all three women was drowning, with toxicology tests confirming no signs of drug abuse, alcohol, or violence.

The court heard detailed testimony regarding their mental health, noting that Christina had suffered from persistent anxiety and depression ever since her mother's death. Furthermore, police digital forensic examinations uncovered 227 references to water and 179 references to suicide stored on her personal laptop computer.

In contrast, no such mental health issues or concerning search histories were recorded for Rebecca, while Jane was found not to be registered with any local doctor.
