The Sindh government has officially declared Tharparkar a calamity-hit district amid severe drought-like conditions across the region. The decision was reached during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who directed provincial authorities to implement immediate emergency measures to address the unfolding humanitarian crisis.
Officials briefed the Chief Minister that all seven talukas of Tharparkar are currently facing an acute drought, with estimates indicating that 85% to 90% of crops have been destroyed or rendered unproductive. According to the agriculture extension department, highly uneven and insufficient rainfall caused both seasonal crops and natural grazing grass to wither long before reaching maturity.
The Chief Minister was informed that rainfall recorded across Tharparkar's seven talukas in September 2026 ranged from a meager one to 36 millimetres. This lack of precipitation has severely impacted the local agrarian economy and the survival of livestock, which serves as the primary source of income for the majority of the desert population.
CM Murad directed authorities to prioritize the provision of clean drinking water and ordered the immediate repair and restoration of all inactive reverse osmosis (RO) plants across the district. He emphasized that the functionality of these plants is critical to preventing water-borne diseases and ensuring basic survival for the residents.
He further instructed the Chief Secretary to examine the technical feasibility of laying a dedicated water pipeline from Naukot to Mithi. This project is intended to serve as a long-term water supply solution for the area, moving away from temporary relief measures toward sustainable infrastructure development.
Additionally, the Chief Minister sought comprehensive recommendations to support livestock owners whose animals are currently suffering due to the lack of fodder and water. He stressed that the loss of livestock would be a devastating blow to the local economy and must be mitigated through timely intervention.
CM Murad ordered continuous monitoring of all relief efforts, affirming that the Sindh government would provide every possible assistance to the people of Tharparkar. He warned that any negligence in the delivery of aid would not be tolerated and that the administration must remain vigilant until the situation stabilizes.
The provincial government has also coordinated with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to ensure that food supplies and medical camps are established in the most affected areas. These measures are part of a broader strategy to prevent the migration of families and animals to urban centers.
Local representatives have been tasked with overseeing the distribution of relief goods to ensure transparency and efficiency. The Chief Minister concluded the meeting by reiterating his commitment to the welfare of the people of Tharparkar, promising that the government would stand by them during this difficult period.
As the situation develops, the Sindh government remains in contact with meteorological experts to monitor weather patterns and prepare for any further contingencies that may arise in the coming months.
