Jason Isaacs Marks 28 Years Sober: 'I Was Going To Die'

Actor Jason Isaacs has marked 28 years of sobriety with a candid Instagram video, stating he had no doubt that drugs would have killed him had he not sought help. The 63-year-old Harry Potter and The White Lotus star posted the message on Tuesday, recalling the morning 28 years ago when he woke up after his first night in decades spent without drugs or alcohol.

Isaacs confirmed he has remained substance-free ever since, stressing that he was not sharing his story for self-celebration. Instead, he expressed hope that his message might reach those who feel trapped and believe there is no way to change their lives.

He explained that while he once lived without hope, he now leads a life filled with it. He added that while life is not always blissful, he is grateful simply to be alive.

The actor credited the Twelve Step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous with changing his life, noting that he eventually stopped trying to control his circumstances and asked for help. While acknowledging there are many routes to recovery, his message to those in dire situations was simple: "Just ask."

Isaacs, best known as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, has previously spoken openly about his addiction. In a 2020 interview with The Big Issue, he revealed he first drank at age 12 and by 16 had begun a "decades-long love affair with drugs."

He marked 27 years of sobriety on 5 October last year with a similar message. The actor's journey serves as a testament to the power of seeking professional support and community-based recovery programs.

His transparency has been widely praised by fans and fellow actors alike, highlighting the importance of destigmatizing addiction recovery in the public eye. As he continues his career, Isaacs remains a vocal advocate for mental health and substance abuse awareness.
